Today I want to chat about something that's really close to my heart - the fascinating world of artificial intelligence (AI) and how it can revolutionise Easy Read information.
You've probably heard a lot about AI recently. From those clever voice assistants to self-driving cars. Here at Photosymbols we're exploring how AI can be our ally in making Easy Read.
Think of AI like a smartphone loaded with useful apps. Each app serves a different purpose - writer, editor, artist, photographer and expert on pretty much any topic you can throw at it. AI can simplify and explain complex information making it more accessible for everyone.
Checking AI's Homework
As with any powerful tool there are some important things to consider.
Firstly, there is an issue of trust for the words created. Is the AI getting the facts right? Does it understand the issues? Is it using the right terminology when describing people? An unchecked error could upset your intended reader or cause offence.
Similarly, when using AI to create an image, we must exercise caution. It's important that the image is both truthful and respectful, especially if it is representing people with learning disabilities. We must carefully acknowledge and uphold each person's story and identity.
Including Everyone in the AI Party
Another big concern is making sure that no one gets left behind in this tech revolution. We've seen it happen before. New tech comes along and it’s great - but not everyone gets to benefit. That’s something we’re determined to avoid at Photosymbols.
We’ve developed a new AI policy alongside our Expert Advisers. A big part of this policy is about how we represent people. Let me be clear: every person with a learning disability in our library is, and will continue to be, a real person not an AI-generated character.
However, when it comes to depicting a broader range of elements such as everyday characters, objects, environments and abstract concepts, AI can bring them to life.
New Year, New Friend
Next year, we’re rolling out some new tools that use AI as part of Photosymbols. We’re really excited to show everyone that AI isn’t something to be afraid of.
We've also created a new training course and live event for March 2024. It’s designed for anyone with an interest in AI and how it can help make the world a more accessible place.
AI is a bit like a new friend. It might seem mysterious at first but once you get to know it you’ll find it can help us do some pretty amazing things and make the world a more inclusive place.
